Expert says unregulate usage of agro-chemicals harmful to honey production
Dr Yusuf Madaki, the Director, Animal Health, Yobe Livestock Development Programme, has attributed the dearth in honey production to unregulated use of agro-chemicals that causes pollution in the ecosystem.
Madaki, a Veterinary Doctor made this known in an interview with Newsmen on Monday in Damaturu.
He said that the unregulated use of chemicals was destroying the ecosystem and adversely affecting the production of bees and honey.
“The bee population and other insects, birds, flowers and the ecosystem have been destroyed by unregulated usage of chemicals on farmlands across the country.
“The air, animals, birds, insects, plants and flowers suffer pollution and poisoning from the unregulated use of chemicals on farms,” he said.
Madaki said that bee farming was a lucrative business and could be used as one of the revenue earners for the country.
“Although there are interventions to train displaced persons on bee farming in the state, there are fears of the impact of agrochemicals on success of the bee farming.
“It is in our national interest to regulate the chemical used to meet the honey needs of our growing population and generate employment opportunities,” he said.
Madaki expressed fears that unscrupulous elements might take advantage of the growing demand for honey to sell concoction and adulterated substances to unsuspecting consumers to create more health challenges to the people.
