Mr Samuel Adetuyi, National President, Stella Maris College (SMC) Okitipupa Old Students Association, has appealed to state governments to return mission schools to their previous owners.
Adetuyi made the appeal in Okitipupa on the sidelines of the hand over of 17 classrooms renovated by the association.
According to him, the gesture will ensure adequate funding, infrastructure maintenance and effective management of the schools.
The alumni president expressed worries at the dilapidated state of infrastructure in schools.
Adetuyi, a retired commissioner of police, also stated that the schools were more vibrant and academically outstanding under the management of missions.
”This school has produced well meaning Nigerians in business and politics. We cannot watch it go down.
”It is unfortunate that government is unable to effectively perform its responsibility of funding and management of schools.
”This could be due to dwindling resources and the myriad of challenges that government is facing,” he said.
Adetuyi said that teachers’ welfare, adequate learning facilities and suitable environment were crucial to the survival of education.
He said it would be more beneficial for the government to return mission schools to their original owners.
The alumni president commended the SMC Revamp Project Group for renovating 17 classrooms as a way of giving back to their alma mater.
He restated the alumni’s commitment to return the lost glory of the school and to save it from extinction.
The Stella Maris College Okitipupa was established in 1960 by Catholic missionaries.
